Matcha vs Green Tea: Which Is Better for You?
By Oriental Bite Kitchen Team · Updated 2026-09-15
Matcha and green tea come from the same plant. The difference is what happens to the leaf before it reaches your cup — and that difference is bigger than most people expect. One is an infusion of leaves you throw away; the other is the entire leaf, ground, suspended in water and drunk.
Same leaf, different physics
Green tea for brewing is steamed, rolled and dried. Matcha is shaded for a few weeks before harvest — which boosts chlorophyll and L-theanine — then de-veined, de-stemmed and stone-ground into a powder. With matcha you consume 100% of the leaf. With brewed green tea you consume what dissolves out.
Caffeine: matcha wins by a lot
- Matcha: roughly 60-70 mg per teaspoon (2 g), depending on grade.
- Brewed green tea: roughly 25-30 mg per cup, and often less on a second steeping.
- For reference: an espresso is about 60-65 mg.
So a bowl of matcha is closer to a coffee than to a cup of tea. That matters if you're sensitive, and it matters if you're drinking matcha at four in the afternoon.
Antioxidants and EGCG
Per serving, matcha delivers substantially more catechins — particularly EGCG — simply because you're drinking the whole leaf. But green tea is easier to drink more of, all day, without thinking about it. In practice, a person who drinks four cups of green tea may end up with a comparable daily catechin intake to someone who has one bowl of matcha.
Which one for what
- Focus: matcha. The combination of caffeine and L-theanine produces a calmer alertness than coffee for many people.
- All-day hydration: green tea or a light oolong. Low enough in caffeine to drink through the afternoon.
- After a heavy meal: a roasted oolong or pu-erh — the traditional digestif, and the reason our Oolong Kombucha and Tangerine Peel & Pu-erh Sparkling Tea exist.
- Fat loss: a small, real effect from catechins plus caffeine. Meaningful only alongside a calorie deficit — not a strategy on its own.
How to drink them light
The health difference between tea and soda is not the leaf — it's the sugar. A matcha latte with flavoured syrup is a dessert. Drink both unsweetened, or with a little goji and osmanthus for natural sweetness, as in Rose Hibiscus Sparkling Water.
Cost and practicality
Good ceremonial matcha is expensive per gram; everyday culinary grade is perfectly drinkable and cheaper than a daily coffee. Loose green tea is the cheapest caffeine habit available. If budget matters, drink green tea daily and keep matcha for the days you want the lift.
FAQ
Is matcha healthier than green tea?
Per serving, matcha provides more catechins and caffeine because you consume the whole leaf. But green tea is easier to drink in larger quantities. Both are healthy unsweetened — the deciding factor is usually how much you'll actually drink.
How much caffeine is in matcha versus green tea?
About 60-70 mg per teaspoon of matcha powder, against roughly 25-30 mg per cup of brewed green tea. For comparison, an espresso is around 60-65 mg.
Does green tea or matcha help with weight loss?
Both show a small effect on energy expenditure from catechins plus caffeine, in the region of a few percent. It's real but minor — useful only alongside a calorie deficit and never a substitute for one.
